Pre-purchase survey
Independent condition inspection before you commit, with defects, priorities and practical next steps.
Request this survey
Request an independent marine surveyor for a pre-purchase, condition and value, insurance, damage or specialist assignment. Matching starts with the state and coast, then the vessel, haul-out plan and the requirements of any insurer or lender.
A pre-purchase inspection is not the same assignment as a tonnage measurement or commercial-code survey. We keep the scope clear from the beginning.

For pre-purchase and condition work, competence, experience, insurance and independence are central. For tonnage, registration, coding or statutory work, the flag or accepting organisation may also require a specific appointment.

The United States is not a single survey market. Professional directories, insurer or lender requirements, haul-out seasons and travel distances vary by region, so the exact vessel location and report recipient must be identified first.
A high-volume brokerage, insurance and yacht-service market. Yard rules, hurricane history, moisture testing and specialist engine or rig attendance may be important to the agreed scope.
Find a surveyor in this region →Large sailing and powerboat markets with extensive haul-out capacity. Confirm tidal access, winter storage status and the sea-trial route.
Find a surveyor in this region →Seasonal launch and winter storage strongly affect inspection planning. Establish whether the boat is shrink-wrapped, commissioned or accessible for systems testing.
Find a surveyor in this region →A compressed boating season and winter lay-up can limit sea trials and in-water testing. Confirm launch status and freshwater-specific storage history.
Find a surveyor in this region →Storm exposure, long travel corridors and commercial yards can shape the assignment. Identify repair history and any insurer-requested scope.
Find a surveyor in this region →Separate California and Pacific Northwest markets cover varied materials and vessel uses. Confirm yard access, travel and whether specialist systems or corrosion testing are needed.
Find a surveyor in this region →It is a common US term for a survey describing the vessel’s observed condition and an opinion of value, often requested by an insurer or lender. The recipient’s required format, scope, age limit and surveyor credentials should be confirmed before appointment.
Provide the state, marina or yard, vessel make, model, year, length, material, intended survey type and preferred date. Include haul-out and sea-trial availability plus any insurer, lender, marina or documentation requirements.
SAMS and NAMS maintain professional surveyor directories, but membership alone does not select the right person. Check the individual’s current status, vessel and material experience, insurance, conflicts, scope and acceptance by the report recipient.
Only if the written scope says so. Yard lift and wash, sea trial, engine computer diagnostics, oil analysis, rig inspection and specialist testing are often separate arrangements.
The Coast Guard provides a Simplified Measurement route for eligible vessels using owner-certified information, while formal measurement uses an authorized measurement organization and an onboard survey. Confirm which system applies to the vessel before ordering survey work.
The client appoints the independent surveyor and agrees scope, fee, limitations and reliance directly. US Marine Surveyor is an information and referral service and does not perform the survey.
Potential assignments include new-build & refit supervision, engine diagnostics & oil analysis, rig & mast inspections, corrosion, moisture & ultrasound, thermal imaging & electrical checks, storm, accident & forensic investigation, marine warranty surveys, on-hire & off-hire surveys. Availability depends on the location, vessel and required specialist capability or formal appointment.
Select the country where the vessel is located, or send the exact port, marina or yard so the assignment can be reviewed.
Tell us the vessel, exact United States location and reason for the survey. We can help clarify access and report requirements before you request an introduction.
